HOME RENOVATIONS: PART FIVE

From the first moment Corey and I walked through this home, we knew the kitchen would need some major love. First, we didn't like the L-shaped island or the track lighting overhead. We knew we wanted to close the "drive through window" over the sink that looks into the living room, and we also hoped to upgrade the counters and add a backsplash. When we were budgeting for all of our home renovations, the kitchen is definitely where we devoted a large part of our funds because countertops ain't cheap.

We started with some paint on the walls and demo-ing the island. Corey re-designed and re-built the island to be rectangular in shape and then we got started on laying new flooring. Once the floors were laid and the new island was constructed (complete with ship-lap and a convenient little shelf to hide our microwave), we installed a butcher block countertop from IKEA on the island and purchased quartz countertops for the rest of the kitchen. Corey also installed new pendant lights above the island, new hardware, a new faucet, and thanks to our tile-guy neighbor, Corey learned how to install backsplash. More recently, Corey built and installed shelves above the sink and it really completed the whole design of the kitchen! Giving Corey a ton of credit here (because it's obviously well deserved) but please know I was standing nearby handing him power tools and cheering him along the way and to laying on the sofa just eating snacks, haha.

Our dining area is attached to our kitchen and was just a wide open space. We installed a new light fixture, hung some curtains, and a few pictures and called it a day! Our dining room table is one of my favorite pieces of furniture in our entire home and due to a little bit of damage when it arrived, we got it 75% off!!!

Lastly, our little bar nook is one of the most practical areas of our home. I joke and say that the left side is my side (the coffee side) and the right is Corey's (the bar side) but it's not too far off, haha. I have meant to re-finish this piece of furniture ever since I got it for $50 from FB Marketplace, but have been putting it off for almost a year now. For now, it works for us to store coffee cups, liquor, random glasses, and everything in between, and is fine until I finally get the energy to tackle painting another piece of furniture!
