Corey and I purchased this house in September 2019 - the exact weekend Hurricane Florence was set to hit Charleston! In fact, we actually evacuated to Fort Mill two days after we closed on the house. After watching the news and seeing that Florence was mostly going to miss Charleston, we turned back around all on backroads (because the interstate was closed to route people out of town) and locked ourselves in our new home for 3 days and painted the entire thing! Our house was built in 2004, so it definitely wasn’t far gone by any means, but there were a few tweaks we wanted to make. We didn’t do any extreme renovations like knocking down walls, but we made a few small changes here and there that really made a big difference!
Let's start with the exterior.
Not long after we moved in, both sets of our parents came to visit to help us knock some big projects out of the way! Corey’s parents helped by putting a fresh coat of paint on the front porch and my parents ripped out the front shrubs and planted some new bushes! We haven't touched the front yard since then and truth be told it could use some TLC but for now we just mow our green weeds and call it a day.
These are pictures of our home's exterior at the past 2 Christmases and you can see just how much those tiny bushes have grown (just ignore all of the leaves, haha)!
The backyard has been a completely different story! 4 huge pine trees + 1 giant oak = SO MUCH SHADE. We have approximately 1 blade of grass in the backyard, but Maisy doesn’t seem to mind! In fact, she LOVED our pine straw pit that use to be covering the entire "yard". It may not look like it since there's still no grass, but we've come a long way since those days, haha.
This year, we’ve made some big improvements to the backyard despite still not having any grass including building a new fence along the back edge of our yard since Hurricane Dorian so rudely blew our old one over, hanging string lights, extending the deck, building a brick fire pit and surrounding it with a gravel bed (pictures of this to come!!), placing edging, and planting a few bushes.
We also spruced up our back screened in porch by hanging a TV, adding a sectional and rug, and purchasing a few plants for me to attempt not to kill!

Truth be told, there's still A LOT of work to be done out here and it's a never ending process of raking up the pine needles, but we are happy with where it's headed! We need a few more plants and a whole lot of grass but given my track record with killing off plants we are holding out to see how the current ones survive.
